When World War II began in December of 1941, all able-bodied males eighteen years old were drafted into the military. Many students from Adkin High School were drafted and served during the duration of the war. Adkin High School veterans returned from the war and continued their education and graduated.
The majority of the twenty-two-year-old veterans attended Adkin High School at night and, with the help of the G I bill, they learned trades such as carpentry (taught by Mr. Houston) and brick-laying (taught by Mr. Moore.) These trades enabled them to receive high-paying jobs to support and care for their families.
